The Olympics
Many countries from around the world compete in the Olympics. There are 21 winter Olympics sports (Winter Olympics for Kids). One of the most interesting sports in the winter Olympics is the biathlon. Woman and men from all over the world compete in this event. The Olympics are interesting because people from all over the world enjoy the Olympics and because the winter Olympics include challenging sports like the biathlon.
To begin, the modern Olympics became a heavily enjoyed event after its arrival. The modern Olympic were born in the year 1896, fifteen hundred years after they were originally band. Now the Olympics are an event that all people look forward to watching. The concept of televising the Olympics was tested in 1936 and in 1948, but the first successful telecast was the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Televising the Olympics allowed even more people to enjoy the Olympics (Olympics Museum). The winter Olympics were added in 1924 almost by accident. This happened because they decided to have an international sports week and since some of the sports were winter sports they named it the winter Olympics(More Good Foundation). The addition of the winter Olympics urged more people to start watching the Olympics.
In addition, many people enjoy watching the biathlon. The biathlon was original used as a training exercise for solders. The biathlon is an interesting sport because it combines both cross-country skiing and rifle shooting (Associated Press). France, Russia, and Norway dominated the 2010 winter Olympics for both men and woman biathlon. The biathlon is the most popular winter sport in Europe (Hickok Sports). Annelies Cook of New York and Wynn Roberts of Minnesota finished first in the US Biathlon Nationals in March 2011. Unfortunately, no American biathlete has ever won an Olympic medal in this event (Minnesota Biathlon). It takes a true athlete to compete in the biathlon because it takes both speed and accuracy.
In conclusion, the Olympics are fascinating because people from all over the world take pleasure in the Olympics and because the winter Olympics contain demanding sports like the biathlon. Due to the televising of the Olympics everyone can now enjoy watching the Olympics from their own homes. Maybe someday the United States will have an Olympic champion in the biathlon event.
